Vinton Eagle; 1902
OBITUARY
Joel Jackson Long

J. J. Long was born near Greensburg, Ind., Nov. 10, 1828; was married too Susan Snell in 1854, and removed to Harrison township, Benton county, Ia., in the year 1856, where he has resided ever since. Died at Greensburg, Ind., where he and his wife had gone on a visit, August 19, 1902, age 73 years, 9 months and 9 days. He was the father of ten children, nine of whom, with the mother, lived to mourn the loss of a true husband and a kind father, but they mourn not as those having no hope. In early life he gave himself to God and always lived a consistent christian life. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Eyckner, of Gladbrook, interment at Bear Creek cemetery.

Thus closes the life history of not only a pioneer, but one of the most prominent men of our community. He was one of those plain unassuming men who, by their manly traits of character and deeds of kindness shown to others draw around them a large circle of friends, as was attested in his case by the number that attended the funeral that they might show their respect and love for their departed friend and neighbor. And on his grave we wish to place this eulogy: "An honest man in the noblest work of God."
