L. W. Hartman Died Tuesday
Lewis W. Hartman
Was One of the Pioneer Business Men of Belle Plaine
L. W. Hartman, veteran merchant of this city for half a century passed away at his home, 1609 8th Avenue, on Tuesday evening, March 29th. Illness, duo to the Infirmities of age, had confined him to his home for the past few months but prior to that he was always found at his place of business.
Mr. Hartman was one of that kind of men who could be depended upon to assist In anything that stood for the upbuilding of the community. He was a man of honesty, uprightness and loyal to his convictions of right. Early on life he joined the Methodist Episcopal church and for many years he served as a faithful steward and trustee of that institution and also acted in the capacity as treasurer for a number of years. He was a Knight Templar, a member of the Knights of Pythias and the Order of the Eastern Star, also the Commerce Club of this city.
Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon at two thirty o’clock at the M. E. Church in charge of his pastor, Rev. J. B. Ackman and was largely attended by relatives and friends and representatives of the various fraternal organizations. Interment was made in the family lot In Oak Hill cemetery.
Lewis W. Hartman was born tn Belvidere, Warren county, New Jersey on July 8th, 1846, and passed away at his home in this city on Tuesday March 29th at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 20 days.
He came to this city about fifty-two years ago and for a time he operated a grain elevator. In 1878 he entered into partnership with the Hollis and Hartman Co. with his brother, Andrew J. Harman. When the latter left for California a number of years ago to make his home he purchased his interest and it has since been known as the Hartman Grocery Co. He weathered thru all the business difficulties of the past fifty years and enjoyed a prosperous trade over a wide scope of territory.
On November 16, 1884 he was united in marriage to Miss Josephine Bangs in this city. They started housekeeping and always made their home in this city. Mrs. Hartman passed away on September 16, 1922. He Is survived by his three children, namely Warren H. Hartman, Mrs. Bess Weferel and Harold J. Hartman, all of this city, one grandchild, other relatives and a host of friends.
