Obituary for Josephine N. Grunewald
Josephine N. Grunewald, 98, of Blairstown, died peacefully Saturday, May 5, 2012, at Colonial Manor in Amana under the care of Essence of Life – Iowa Hospice.
A Celebration of Life service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2012, at the Blairstown Presbyterian Church with Gene Spicer and John Wilson officiating. Memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 11, also at the church. Private family committal services will be held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Blairstown.
Josephine Ninfa Grunewald was born June 21, 1913, in Madison, Wisconsin, the daughter of George and Elizabeth Licali Scalissi. She grew up in Madison and graduated from West High School. After graduating from Platteville State Teachers College, she taught for ten years at Lowell Elementary School in Madison.
On July 17, 1943, she was united in marriage with Henry Grunewald in Madison, Wisconsin. The couple farmed near Blairstown and Josephine volunteered and was a substitute teacher in area schools. She also volunteered at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids for 18 years.
She was an active member of the Blairstown Presbyterian Church and the Presbyterian Women’s Organization (PWO). She was involved in the United Fund, was a member of Order of the Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary, and was also a 4-H leader. She also participated in plays in Blairstown. She loved people and entertaining.
She is survived by her daughters, Beth (Don) Kimm and Helen Grunewald and husband, Tom Millward, all of Blairstown; six grandchildren, Cyrena Melich, Jennifer James, Lisa (Craig) Peterson, Georgia (Duncan Kilburn) Millward, Chloe (William Whitmore) Millward and Andrew (Natalie) Whelchel; two great-grandsons, Kyle Bos and Nick Peterson; and two sisters, Ninfa Grinnell and Sally Ward, both of Madison, WI.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1986; daughter Trudy; five brothers and three sisters.
