Donley L. Graham

Donley L. Graham, 63, died Tuesday evening, December 31, 1984 at St. Luke's hospital in Cedar Rapids following several recent strokes.

He was born Feb. 25, 1921 near Shellsburg, the son of Henry D. and Mary J. Russell Graham. During World War II, he served his country as a Sergeant with the U.S. Army in the South Pacific and was awarded the Purple Heart and other metals.

On May 25, 1947 he married Norma C. Barnhill at Iowa City, Iowa. During his life, Mr. Graham had been employed by the Sanitary Dairy of Cedar Rapids and entered the Civil Service in 1950 as a Railway Mailman in Chicago. Later, he became a postal clerk in Cedar Rapids and in 1971, he was appointed Postmaster at Palo, Iowa after serving one year as acting postmaster. He retired in 1979.

Mr. Graham was a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church of rural Shellsburg, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Shellsburg American Legion Post No. 166, served as president of the Shellsburg Library Board and was a past master and member of the Benton City Masonic Lodge No 81 A.F. & A.M. and the White Lily Chapter No 427 of Shellsburg.

He is survived by his wife, Norma; two sons, Michael of Shellsburg, and Wayne of Pekin, Ill.; one daugher Debra (Mrs. David) Clemens of Shellsburg; one granddaughter Jennifer Graham and one step granddaughter, Kimberly Weyhrich, both of Pekin, Ill.; one brother Jack Graham of Cedar Rapids; and one sister Bess Graham of Shellsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Doris Graham Johnson, Lois Graham O'Brian, and one infant brother Merle Graham.

Funeral services will be held at the Oak Grove Christian church, three miles north of Shellsburg, Friday Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Lee A. Wiley officiating. Interment will be held at the Oakwood Cemetery in Shellsburg with Graveside Military Rites conducted by the American Legion Post No. 166 of Shellsburg.

Henry Graham Dies at Oak Grove Home

Henry D. Graham, 72 died at his home in Oak Grove last evening after a three week illness. He had been in failing health for some time. Graham died at the home where he lived his entire life.

He was born March 16, 1879, in the Oak Grove community, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Graham Sr. He married Mabel Russell of Newhall at Vinton Sept 27, 1905. He was a member of the Shellsburg Forsquare church.

Surviving are his widow, three daughters Mrs. Lois O'Brien and Mrs Doris Johnson of Shellsbug and Bessie at home. two sons Jack and Don of Cedar Rapids, and five granchildren, one son, Merle, died in infancy. Mr. Graham was the last of his immediate family of nine children.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Federated church at Shellsbug Thursday afternoon at two o'clock by Rev. A. R. Iavicolli of Muscatine, a former pastor at Shellsburg. Burial will be in Shellsburg Oakwood cemetery.

The body is at the Fry-Holland funeral home at Vinton...

Mrs. Mabel J. Graham dies at age 93
Mabel J. Graham

Mrs. Mabel J. Graham, 93, of rural Shellsburg was dead on arrival Thursday morning at the Virginia Gay Hospital following a sudden illness.

She was born April 15, 1883 at Newhall, a daughter of William and Mary Munn Russell. She was married September 27, 1905 at Vinton to Henry Graham, who preceded her in death in 1951.

Surviving are two sons, Donley Graham of Shellsburg, Jack Graham of Cedar Rapids, two daughters, Mrs. Jim (Lois) O'Brian and Miss Bess Graham of Shellsburg, eight grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, one infant son, one brother and three sisters.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Phillips Funeral Home with the Rev. George Koch officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery.

Walker Graham

Walker Graham buried
Shellsburg Jan 15 -special: The remains of Walker H. Graham arrived here Thursday night and funeral services were held at the Baptist church Friday afternoon Rev Fenn Moore officiated and interment was in Oakwood cemetery.

The deceased was born in Philadelphia on February 6, 1878,and when 12 years of age came to Iowa with his parents and located on a farm north of town where the aged father still resides. In 1912 Mr. Graham returned to Philadelphia and engaged in busines; a month ago he became seriously ill and his sister, Mrs. Mae Mason, went to Philadelphia to care for him. She accompanied the remains to Shellsburg.

Mr. Graham was a member of the Woodmen and K. P. lodges and belonged to the Oak Grove Christian church. He was never married.

Preaching service was not held Sunday on account of the heavy snow Saturday night 1-12-1923.

W. H. Graham died at the home of his cousin in Philadelphia, Pa Jan. 8, 1923. Mr. Graham was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Graahm, Sr. and was born in Philadelphia Feb. 6, 1866.

He came to Iowa with his parents when a child and spent many years of his life in this vicinity. He was a member of the Oak Grove church of Christ, and a member of the Masonic lodge at Shellsburg. Walker had been in poor health for several years and failed rapid during the past several months. His sister,Mae Mason went to Philadelphia a few weeks ago to care for him and will arrive here with the body Thursday evening.

The funeral will be held at the Baptist church in Shellsburg Friday afternoon and interment will be in the Shellsburg cemetery. Besides the father, Henry Graham, he is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Lydia Peterman of Ashby Minn., Mrs. Sarah Daugherty, of California, Mrs Lou Jones or (Don paper is blurry ) of Medford.Okla. and three brothers, Henry, Sam, and John of this place. Walker was of a pleasant and good natured disposition and has many friends here who mourn his death.
