Alma M. Gessner
Alma M. Thoman Gessner, 88, died Friday evening in Keystone Nursing Care Center, where she had been a resident since June.
Survivors include two sons, Marvin and Gerald, both of Newhall; a daughter, Eileen Rilley of Coggon; and 11 grandchildren.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, St. Paul's Catholic Church. Burial: St. Michael's Cemetery, Norway. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Phillips' in Keystone, where a Scripture service will be at 6:30 p.m. and a parish rosary recited at 7:30 p.m. Friends may call at the church from 9 a.m. until time of services Wednesday. A memorial fund has been established.
LaVerne Gessner
NEWHALL - LaVerne Gessner, 82, died Friday, November 14, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness.
LaVerne was born May 10, 1926 at Watkins to John Michael and Sadie Mae (Stevenson) Gessner. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters for over 50 years.
Her parents and two brothers, Arnold Gessner and Verle Gessner, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her two sisters-in-law, Rosemary Gessner of Newhall, Florence Gessner of Macon, MO; one nephew, John (Susan) Gessner of Watkins; three nieces, Marlene (Curt) DoBraska of Centerville, Joyce (Randy) Bieber of Centerville, Mary (Barry) Garvin of Muscatine and twelve great nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass was celebrated Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Newell with Father Jack McClure as Celebrant. Interment was at St. Patrick's and St. Paul's Catholic Cemetery near Watkins.

Louise Gessner
Louise Gessner, 51, died Sunday afternoon in Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids, following a long illness.
Surviving are her husband, Marvin of Newhall; three sons, Alan of West Des Moines and Dale and Leo, both of Newhall; three daughters, Ann Gessner of Marshalltown, Carol Gessner of Iowa City and Barbara Gessner of Newhall; mother Anna Kacer of Tama; and a brother, Edward Kacer of Tama.
Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, St. Paul's Catholic Church. Burial: SS Patrick and Paul's Cemetery, Watkins. Friends may call after 1 p.m. today at Russell's in Blairstown and after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church. There will be a rosary service at 3:30 p.m. tonight at the funeral home and a wake service at 7 p.m.

Mrs. Geo. Gessner, 51, ill five months, died last evening in Mercy hospital, Cedar Rapids. The family moved to a farm near Vinton in 1935, from Norway, Benton county. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 9:00 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic church here by the Rev. Father F. Churchill. Burial will be in the Norway cemetery.
Mary Ann Voss, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Voss, was born April 11, 1885, at Ida Grove, Iowa. She was married June 9, 1908, to George Gessner, the wedding taking place at Norway. Surviving are the husband and following children: Mrs. Helen Carlson of Cedar Rapids, George, Andrew, Mary and Joe Gessner, all of the Vinton community. The deceased was a member of the Catholic church.

M. Gessner Dies in Norway Home; Burial Monday

NORWAY. - Micheal Gessner, 72, retired Benton county farmer, died here Thursday night. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Micheal's Catholic church by the Rev. Father Kunzel. Burial will be in St. Micheal's cemetery.
Mr. Gessner, a resident of the Norway vicinity for many years, was born Nov. 25, 1862, in Ohio. He was married here to Helena Becker in March, 1886. Children surviving are Mrs. Helena Brecht and John Gessner, of Watkins, Mike Gessner of Newhall, and Mrs. Elizabeth Thoman of Norway. Other relatives are nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Norway Resident Passes Away
Michael Gessner
Michael Gessner passed away at his home here on Thursday, April 18, 1935 after a week’s illness, caused by a paralytic stroke. He was born November 25, 1862, in the state of Ohio, and in later years came to Iowa where he has since resided. At the time of his death he was aged 72 years, four months and 24 days.
He was united in marriage to Josephine Becker 49 years ago, on March 9, 1886. He spent the greater part of his life on a farm northwest of Norway, which is now farmed by his son, Mike.
Besides his widow,, he is survived by four children, two daughters and two sons. The daughters are Mrs. Helena Brecht, Mrs. Elizabeth Thoman, the sons are John and Mike Gessner, all of this community. There are also eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild. He leaves two sisters, Mrs. Chas. Becker, and one brother, George, of near Vinton. Three sisters and one brother preceded him in death.
The funeral services were held at St. Michaels church Monday morning in charge of Rev Kunkel. Interment was in St. Michaels cemetery north of town.

NEWHALL - Michael Charles Gessner, 88, World War I veteran, died Wednesday evening at the Virginia Gay Hopital annex following a short illness.
He was born July 10, 1892 at Norway, the son of Michael and Josephine Becker Gessner, and married Alma Thoman, Sept. 7, 1921, at Fairfax. He was the first man drafted in Benton County in World War I. A retired farmer, he was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Marvin and Gerald of Newhall; one daughter, Eileen Reilly of Coggon; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, two sisters and one brother.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Newhall, with the Rev. J.R. McDonald and the Rev. Dwayne J. Thoman of Dubuque, great-nephew of the deceased, officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery at Norway, with military rites conducted by Newhall American Legion Post 167.
Friends may call at the Fellmet Funeral Home in Keystone after 1 p.m. Friday. Rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Friday by the Altar and Rosary Society and 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The casket will be open at the church prior to the service.
