Catharine Gelting
Catharine Gelting was born in Washington county, Maryland, Nov. 21,1817 and departed this life in Van Horne, Iowa, at 1.25 o’clock a. m. Jan. 23, 1805. She was married to Elijah Detwiler, Nov. 11th, 1841. Of this union there were seven sons and three daughters. One daughter and two sons preceeded her in death.
An aged husband, five sons, two daughters and one brother remaining with sad and sorrowful hearts to mourn her death.
She, with her husband and family moved from the east, and settled in Benton county, Iowa, in October, 1861, and faithfully and patiently endured the hardships and privations incident to early pioneer life.
From her childhood on she had been a faithful, earnest, christian. Of late years she connected herself with the M. E, church of Van Horne, lowa. She leaves to her children a legacy of kind and loving deeds, which will inspire them to a higher and nobler life.
Funeral services will be held in the M.E. church, Van Horne, today at 11 o’clock. The remains will be interred in the Big Grove cemetery beside those of a daughter, buried there Dec. 14, 1868.
The cause of her death was paralysis.
