Alfred L. Geater, 76, Vinton Farmer, Dies

Alfred L. Geater
Alfred L. Geater, 76, Vinton farmer, died at three p. m . yesterday at his farm home north of town in Harrison township from heart complications following a two year illness. Born Sept. 16, 1868, at Valparaiso, Ind., he was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Nolan Geater. On Sept. 24, 1890, in Harrison township, he married Anna Cottrell, who survives him. Mr. Geater lived in Harrison township community all his life with the exception of his first five years in Valparaiso. Besides his wife, he is survived by five children - Mrs. Mary Floyd of Walker, Mrs. Ruth Schroeder of Newhall, and Ray, Stanley and Clark, all of Vinton. Also he leaves one sister, Mrs. Mable Smouse of Brandon, and two brothers, Barton Geater of Vinton and Leo Geater of Waterloo.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 at the Alcorn funeral home with the Rev. C. Breider?hal in charge. Burial will be in the Bear Creek cemetery.

Mrs. Annie Geater, 88 of Vinton, Dies

Mrs. Annie M. Geater, 84, lifetime resident of Vinton, died Sunday evening at 6:45, at the home of her son, Stanley Geater in Taylor township. Death was attributed to a stroke. She had been ill for three weeks.
Mrs. Geater was born Annie M. Cottrell on March 4, 1867, in Taylor township. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Cottrell. She married Alfred L. Geater, Sept. 24, 1890, in Harrison township. He died Jan. 25, 1945. She was a member of the Methodist church. Surviving are three sons, Ray Geater, Stanley Geater and Clark Geater, all of Vinton, two daughters, Mrs. W. W. Floyd and Mrs. Ervin Schrader, also of Vinton, 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Two grand daughters and a brother and a sister preceded her in death.
A funeral service will be conducted by Rev. E. L. Shaffer in the Miller funeral home here Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock. Burial will be in Bear Creek cemetery.

Earl G. Geater
VINTON - Earl G. Geater, 78, of 402 W. 13th St., Vinton, died Friday morning, May 18, 1984 in Virginia Gay Hospital Annex, where he had been a resident since October 1983.
Services for Mr. Geater are pending.
Mr. Geater was born Sept. 12, 1905 in rural Vinton to James and Minnie Geater. His first wife was the former Myrtle Ralston, who preceded him death. He married Jessie Stone at Independence on Oct. 30, 1965, and she survives him.
Mr. Geater had always worked with mechanical problems for people, and loved wood-working. He was a member of the First Christian Church, Vinton.
Survivors include his wife, Jessie of Vinton; one son, Duane Geater of Independence; two daughters, Elma Geater of rural Vinton and Kay Strohecker of Waterloo; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Preceding him death in addition to his first wife, were three brothers, one sister and one son, James.

George W. Geater
Geo. W. Geater died at his home on Beckett street yesterday morning at 7:00 o'clock. Mr. Geater had been in poor health during the past two years, suffering from hardening of the arteries, and two weeks ago he had a paralytic stroke.
While not an active citizen in one sense of the word, Mr. Geater always took a keen interest in public affairs and had a very warm place in his heart of his many friends and acquaintances and was a man devoted to his family.
He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served four years and eight months in Co. D. of the 8th Iowa infantry, and was a member of the P. M. Coder post of the G. A. R.
Mr. Geater was born in the town of Kingsbury, Berkshire, England, June 30, 1838, and came to Iowa in 1855 with his grandfather. He was married to Sarah M. Swaim at Vinton on April 3, 1864, while home on a furlough during the war. After the war he moved to the farm where he lived until fifteen years ago, when he moved to Vinton and since the death of his wife on February 28, of last year he has made his home with his son, Jesse Geater. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Geater, three of whom are living. Two sons, John and Henry, died in infancy. The other three sons are Chas. S. and Jesse A., living in Vinton and James W. who lives north of Vinton. Mr. Geater also leaves one sister living in England and a brother, Noah Geater, living in Vinton.
The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 10:00 o'clock at the Methodist church, being conducted by Rev. T. H. Temple of the Methodist church, of which Mr. Geater was a member. The burial will be made in the Bear Creek cemetery.
The children wish to thank those friends and neighbors for their many kindnesses during his illness and at the time of death.

James W. Geater Dies at Farm Home; Funeral on Tuesday

James W. Geater
Funeral services for James W. Geater, long-time Vinton farmer, who died at his farm home north of Vinton at 9:20 p. m. Saturday, will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p. m. at the Alcorn & Holland funeral home. Mr. Geater, who had been ill for about four years, died of a complication of diseases.
Born July 2, 1869, at Vinton, the deceased was a son of George and Sarah Geater. He was married at Vinton Nov. 1, 1899, to Minnie Viola Keller, who with one son, Earl of Vinton, and three grandchildren survives. Mr. Geater had lived on his farm for 45 years. He was a member of the Vinton Methodist church and the Modern Woodmen lodge.
Also surviving is one brother, Charles of Vinton. Three brothers preceded him in death.

Minnie Geater, 89, Dies at Lutheran Home in Vinto
Minnie Viola Geater
Mrs. Minnie Geater, 89, died at the Lutheran home here last night about ten o'clock. She was born in Vinton April 2, 1874, and had lived her entire life in this community.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m., at the Fry and Holland funeral home, conducted by the Rev. Robert Phillips. Burial will be in the Bear Creek cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m., Thursday.
As Minnie Viola Keller, she was the daughter of Alex and Mary Keller. She was married Nov. 1, 1899, to James Geater. She taught in the rural schools north of town and she and her husband farmed. He preceded her in death in April, 1940. She is survived by her only son, Earl Geater of Vinton; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Geater was the oldest member of the Methodist church and had been a member the longest of any present members.

Funeral arrangements were being planned here today for Mrs. Earl Geater of Vinton who died last night at 8:40 in St. Mary's hospital at Rochester, Minn., after submitting to a major operation. She was 48.
Mrs. Geater was born Myrtle Clime Ralston Feb. 17, 1906, in Vinton. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Ralston. She married Earl Geater July 25, 1925. Mrs. Geater had lived all her life in the Vinton community.
Surviving are her husband, four children, Duane, James, Elma and Susan Kay, three brothers, Roy Ralston, Seth Ralston and Morris Ralston, one sister, Mrs. Aubrey Smock, her parents and two grandchildren, Judy and Cindy Geater.

Sarah M. Geater
Mrs. Sarah M. Geater died at her home in this city rather suddenly Sunday evening at 9:30, at the age of 66 years. Sarah M. Swaim was born in Forsythe county, N. Car., September 9, 1843. she moved with her parents to Indiana when but a child and after a short residence there moved to Illinois. She came to Benton county in 1861, has resided here since. She was married to Geo. W. Geater and to this union five children were born, the eldest and youngest dying in infancy. The surviving children are, James W., Charles S., and Jesse A., all of Vinton.
Mrs. Geater joined the Wesleyan Methodist church in 1867, and later transferred to the M. E. church of this city under the pastorate of Rev. Matthew H. Smith. She had been in failing health for seven years, but death came suddenly Sunday evening.
The funeral services were held at the home Tuesday morning at 10:30, conducted by her pastor, Rev. W. F. Spry, of the M. E. church, and burial was made at the Bear Creek Cemetery.

Mrs. George W. Geator, who has been in failing health for the past seven years, died very suddenly last Sunday evening, Feb. 27th, at about 9:30.
The funeral services will be held at the family residence this (Tuesday) morning at 10:30 and the interment will be in Bear Creek cemetery. The services will be in charge of Rev. W. F. Spry.
Susan M. Swaim was born in Forsythe county, North Carolina, Sept. 9th, 1843. She moved to Indiana when a child. After residing there for some time she moved to Illinois where she remained for ten years. In 1861 she moved from Illinois to Benton county where she has resided ever since. She was married to George W. Geator April 3, 1864. Five children were born to them, two dying in infancy. Those surviving are James W., Chas. S. and Jesse A.
She joined the Wesleyan church in 1867 at the Noble settlement. She later joined the Methodist Episcopal church in this city under the pastorate of Rev. M. W. Smith.

Funeral for W. H. Geater at Vinton

Vinton, Ia. - Funeral services for William H. Geater, 69, farmer in this vicinity for many years, who died after a three-month's illness in Vinton hosptial late Friday, will be at Fry-Holland funeral home...Rev. Carl Soderbloom officiating.
He was born Mar. 27, 1876, and farmed near Vinton all his life, In 1917, his wife, the former Hattie Fowler, preceded him in death.
Surviving are two sons, Bert, Dysart, Ia., and Robert W., Van Horne, Ia., a daughter, Mrs. Esther Lavender, Cedar Rapids, Ia., four grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Wallace Weaver, Marshalltown, Ia., and Mrs. Ernest Bennett, Ft. Dodge, Ia., and a brother, Harry, Waterloo. One brother and one sister preceded him in death.
Burial will be in Maplewood cemetery.
