Cornelius Ellis, President Ellis Lumber Co., Died Thursday — Funeral Held Saturday
The funeral of the late Cornelius Ellis who died suddenly at his home in this city last Thursday morning at about 9:30, was held from the residence Saturday afternoon at two o’clock. The services were conducted by Rev. P. M. Simms, of the Presbyterian church, Mr. Ellis having been an elder in this church for the past fifty years.
Cornelius Ellis was born November 21, 1827, at Willston, Alabama. When he was five years old the family moved to Ohio and eight years later they moved to a farm near Indianapolis. Here he was married March 4, 1852 to Miss Mary Colley and four years later they came to Vinton. Six children were born to them, three of whom are living, W. C. Ellis, Anna Ellis Taggart and Abbie Ellis Brown. Mr. Ellis established the Ellis lumber yard in 1805 and has remained an active member since, being president of the Ellis Lumber Co. at the time of his death.
Mr. Ellis was a generous hearted man and always took an active interest in whatever concerned the welfare of the town. He was a very liberal contributor to public enterprises and was always ready to help the unfortunate and needy. He was held in high esteem by the citizens of Vinton and one and all feel the loss of so good a man.
