Alta Augusta DeWitt
Mrs. Murl DeWitt Passes Into Great Beyond After Brief Illness
Alta Augusta Mayhew was born near Blairstown, Iowa, February 21, 1891, and passed away at her home near Tingley, Iowa, October 30, 1919 aged 28 years, 8 months and 9 days.
At the age of three years her parents moved to Tingley, where they resided for seven years. After leaving here the remainder of her early life was spent near Blairstown, with the exception of one year the family lived in Minnesota.
On February 12, 1913, she was united in marriage with Murl DeWitt, of Tingley. They immediately began housekeeping on a farm near Tingley where she resided until the time time of her death.
Alta was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George P. Mayhew of Blairstown, Iowa. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, her parents, five sisters, Stella, Hazel, Edith, Ethel and Lucile; two brothers Eldo and Rex; and a host of relatives and friends.
She was converted during evangelistic meetings held by Rev. Mr. Parker at Wishard Chapel the fall of 1915, and immediately united with that church. Since then she has done her best to follow in her Master's foosteps [sic]. Her Christian faith has been an inspiration to all with whom she associated. She was an active member of the Martha Johnson W. C. T. U., also the Ladies' Aid Society. In the work of these societies Alta did her best, often working beyond her physical strength. Her pleasant ways and unselfish disposition made every one her friend. Her place in the home and community can never be filled.
The funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church at Tingley conducted by Rev. W. W. Gordon, attend by a very large numbeer of people. Interment in Tingley cemetery.
Deceased spent most of her life before her marriage in Blairstown and vicinity and was a general favorite with all whom it was their privilege to call her friend, and in her yearly visit at the home of her parents those old friendships were renewed and there are many sad hearts beside those of her immediate family caused by her sudden death. Just two months ago she bade her family and friends goodby, having completed one of those visits. In response to the summons her parents hastened to her bedside only to find she has passed to the Great Beyond.

Sad Death of Young Matron

Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Mayhew received word on Thursday from Tingley that their daughter, Mrs. Murel DeWitt was very ill. They hastened at once to her bedside, word having since been received of ther death.
Mrs. DeWitt had been afflicted for the past four years with diabetis, but a recent letter to her parents stated that she was feeling fine and her death at this time is a great shock to her family and friends.
Her brothers and sisters left the last of the week to be present at the funeral. They are the Misses Edith, Ethel, and Lucille Mayhew, Mr. and Mrs. Eldo Mayhew, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Pearson and Rev. Mayhew. Deceased will be better remembered as Miss Alta Mayhew, the eldest daughter of the family.
