Mrs. Mose Denman Is Called Home
One of the Early Pioneers of Benton County Passed Away at Her Home in Vinton, April 2nd

It is the sad duty of the Eagle to chronicle in this issue the death of Mrs. Mose Denman, one of the early pioneers of Benton County
Jane Ann Weatherwax was born in Schenectady county, New York, June 29, 1837 and died in Vinton, Iowa, April 2, 1912, aged 74 years, 9 months and 4 days. She was the daughter of Thomas and Jane Clark Weatherwax, and was one of a family of twelve children, eight boys and four girls. She with her family moved from New York in 1848 and settled on a farm in Kane county, Illinois, where they resided until the spring of 1854, when they moved to Benton County, Iowa where she has since resided
She was married to Mose Denman March 15, 1855. Four children were born to this union, two boys and two girls, Mrs. Rilla Marietta of Cedar Rapids; Herbert L. Denman of Battle Creek, Michigan; Mrs. George R. Knapp and Fred Denman of this city
Mrs. Denman is survived by six brothers and one sister; also seven grandchildren
She was an active member of the Advent church and died a strong believer in that faith
The funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the George R. Knapp home, conducted by Elder Campbell of Nevada, Iowa, assisted by Rev. A.T. Bishop, pastor of the local Methodist church. Th remains were laid beside her husband in Evergreen Cemetery.

Death is reaping a rich harvest to Vinton and vicinity this winter. The Eagle has not in long while if ever, chronicled as many deaths of older people as it has in the last month
Last Thursday night death claimed one of our very earliest pioneers, Moses Denman, one of the very best, and best known men of this part of the county. He had suffered for the past 3-4 years from paralysis and in the early part of the week had suffered another stroke, which proved to be fatal
Mr. Denman was born near Akron, Ohio July 3, 1833, and died in Vinton December 21, 1905. He came to Vinton in September of 1853, and was among it's earliest pioneers. He was married to Miss Jane A. Weatherwax March 15, 1855 at the home of her parents in Vinton, who lived in a log cabin on the corner where Cliff Watsons dwelling now stands. The wife survives him and with the following children mourn his death: Mrs. Rilla (Orrilla, widow of John E. Marietta; Mrs. George R. Knapp (Elsa); Herbert L. Denman; and Fred Denman
Mr. Denman's occupation was tailoring and for many years he worked with the late David Withrow. For many years, during this time he was night watchman at the county courthouse in the treasurers office. After the death of Mr. Withrow he gave up his position there and a number of years ago gave up his position at the courthouse. In those days nearly everyone came to the county seat at least once a year to pay taxes, attend court or convention and it is safe to say that probably no man in the county had a more extended acquaintance than Mr. Denman
He was genial in his manner, the soul of honor, of the strictest integrity. It is safe to say that never knowingly wronged a man. He was the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. He was a loving father and husband in his home, a faithful brother in his lodge and a friend and helper to mankind. It is safe to say that no man has passed away from us that has been more sincerely mourned. The funeral services were held in the Methodist Church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 and the remains were laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery.
