Blanche Bergen
Wednesday afternoon occurred the funeral of Blanche Bergen, a former resident of this place. Her body was brought back to this place and buried by the side of her mother [Nancy R. (Harbert) Martyn]. She was [born in June 1872 in Iowa] the daughter of Rev. [Ashbiel G.] Martin [Martyn] and was married to W. S. Bergen about ten years ago. One little son [Percy] survives her. A large congregation of old friends gathered at the church to pay the last tribute. Rev. Haskell preached the sermon. A large procession followed the remains to the [Oakwood] cemetery.

Edna F Bergen
SHELLSBURG Edna F Bergen, 70, died Friday in Virginia Gay Hospital, Vinton, following a brief illness. Services; 10:30 a.m. Monday, Zion Lutheran Church Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel Vinton, and after 8:30 a.m. Monday at the church.
Survivors include her husband Robert; two daughters Carol Junge of Keystone and Susan Cross of Marion; and a sister, Lois Dietrich of Van Horne.
Also surviving are her sons in-law, Darold Junge and Norman Cross, five grandchildren, Darren Junge, Cedar Falls, Steven and Michelle Junge. Waterloo. Raymond Cross and Marie Cross, Marion; and her brother in-law, Glen Dietrich.

Mrs. Isaac Bergen, a resident of Benton county for 47 years, passed away at her home in Vinton Feb. 19, at the age 0f 73 years.

Succumbs to attack
Oscar Begen Farmer Living Near of Pneumonia
Oscar Bergen an honored citizen of Canton township passed away at 3 o'clock Saturday morning at the family home northeast of Shellsburg. Mr. Bergen had been sick with the grip about a week and his illness was not considered of a serious nature until twelve hours before his death, when pneunonia developed.
Funeral services were held from the Methodist church in Shellsburg this morning at 10 o'clock and the burial was in the Shellsburg cemetery. Many old friends from this section of Benton county gathered at the obsequies to pay a last tribute of respect to a man whom all had honored and respected.
Shocks Commnunity
Mr. Bergen's death comes as a shock to the entire community, Very few knew of his illness and in his own family no alarm had been felt as to his condition.
The passing of Mr. Bergen removes from Canton township one of her influential farmers and citizens.
Oscar was born in Benton County and all his life had been spent with in it's borders. His aged mother a pioneer settler of the county, is still living and made her home with her son. Deceased was 52 years of age. The surviving relatives are the wife and five sons. Lloyd, Peter, Clarence, Edgar and Howard all at home, one brother living in New Mexico and the aged mother. Mr Bergen had of late years engaged in the nursery business to quite an extent and had met with success in this line. He carried this success in this line. He carried this on the connection with farming.

Robert John Bergen
SHELLSBURG Robert John Bergen, 78, died Sunday morning, March 30, 1997, in St Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, after a brief illness. Services; 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Zion Lutheran Church, by the Rev. Mark Leckband. Oakwood Cemetery, with military rites. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Phillips Funeral Home, Vinton.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Junge of Keystone and Susan Cross of Marion; four brothers, James of Vinton, Harold of Davenport, Ardith of Ingram, Texas, and Marvin of Shellsburg; and a sister, Betty Olson of Osage Beach, Mo. Also surviving are a son in-law, Darold Junge; four grandchildren; Darren Junge; four grandchildren; Darren Junge and wife Sherri of Waterloo, Steven Junge and wife Michelle of North Liberty, and Raymond and Marie Cross, both of Marion; a great grandaughter, Jenna Lee Junge of Waterloo; and three sisters-in–law, Martha, El Verna and Florence Bergen. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edna, on Jan 17, 1982, and a brother-in-law, Arlie Olson.
Born Sept. 10, 1918, in Shellsburg the son of Peter and Anna Schmidthans Bergen, he married Edna F. Husted on May 3, 1942, in Atkins.
Robert was a self employed contractor and worked 18 years for Rock Island Millwork in Cedar Rapids. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Shellsburg, where he served as financial secretary for 35 years, and a 53-year member of Post 166 Shellsburg American Legion, serving as past commander. Robert served more than 30 years with the Shellsburg Fire Department, most of those years as Chief. He served on the town council for 10 years, played with the Louis DeKlotz Orchestra for more than 40 years and served his country in the Army during World War II.
