Died, at his residence, two miles north of Garrison, Friday, January 11th, Mr. George Baum, father of Squire Baum of this place.

Death of Mrs. Mary Baum
Mary Baum
Mrs. Mary Baum died at the home of her son, John Baum, in Garrison, Sunday, February 7th, about one o'clock, following an illness of several weeks duration. She had reached the ripe age of 86 years, 3 months, and 19 days.
Mary Stickler was born near Lititz, Pennsylvania, October 18, 1822. In 1835, at the age of thirteen, she moved to Ashland County, Ohio, then on the frontier of civilzation, and thence came to Benton county, Iowa, settling in Carlisle Grove, again on the frontier in 1856. It will thus be seen that "Grandma Baum," as she was familiarly known to her friends, was a pioneer in two of the leading states of the union and had a part in spreading the seeds of civilization that have made the nation great. It is little wonder that she became possessed of many of the characteristics of the pioneers, qualtities that endeared her to her family and friends. For more than fifty years she resided on the old homestead in Carlisle Grove, where she shared the joys and sorrows that came to the average family in the span of a half century. About two years ago she moved to Garrison to quietly pass her remaining days. Seven children survive.
She was a devout christian nearly all the days of her life, making her church home with the Methodists and United Brethren in Christ. During her life, and especially in the later months, when suffering so, her faith and trust in Jesus has been beautiful. In the full possession of her mind until the very last, she affirmed her willingness and readiness to go home to Jesus.
The funeral services were held at the home of her son John Baum, on Monday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, and were largely attended by her old neighbors and friends. The services were conducted by Rev. Logan of the Presbyterian church. The interment was made in the Carlisle Grove Cemetery, located near to the home where she spent so many years of her life.-Independent.
