It was in this general area that the town of Newhall erected a "pest shack" in May 1916. During May of the year, three cases of smallpox developed, and the residences of Augusta Peterson, H.M. Zoring and Peter Jacobson were placed under quarantine. During June, six more cases developed, and the homes of William Russell, Mrs Sarah Erland and John H. Feilman were also quarantined. Certain of the town's residents, six in number, either infected or exposed, rather than restricting their residences, were housed in the pest shack from six to nineteen days. Such persons were Mr. and Mrs A.E. Strawm. Don Swartout, Harry Luwe, Charles Whitson, and William Uptegrove.
