The Methodist Episcopal Church, of Vinton, Iowa, was organized in the fall of 1853 through the missionary labors of Rev. H. S. Burleigh. The first class consisted of J. D. Tracy, D. B. Keyes and wife, E. Howard and wife, Wm. Taft and wife, E. Evans and wife and H. J. Morris and wife. For several years the meetings were held at the homes of the various members. When Rev. J. Ridlington was serving as pastor of the church, the house of worship was commenced, and in 1860 the basement was made ready for use. In 1862, the building was fully completed and dedicated to the service of Almighty God. In 1869, the increase in members compelled an addition to the building in the form of a transept, which was completed the same year. The building thus finished was made capable of seating 700 persons, and was located by the B., C. R. & N. railway near the Kelly Canning Factory. This location was unsatisfactory on account of disturbances arising from noise of trains and from its not being central. The question of changing the location and erecting a new and more modern structure had long been discussed pro and con, when at last it culminated in the purchase of the present new site in 1887 and the erection of the new structure, a cut of which appears on the fourth page. This was done under the pastorate of Rev. M. H. Smith, D. D. It is valued at $20,000 and was dedicated the first Sabbath in January, 1888, by Chaplain McCabe, with $3,000 debt remaining upon it. In the fall of 1891 the present pastor Dr. J. W. Clinton was appointed to this charge. The following persons have been appointed pastors of this church: H. S. Burleigh, 1853; Nelson Wells, 1854; S.
