JOSIAH SCOTT, a well known and respected farmer, residing on section 34, Benton Township, was born in Allen County, Ohio, March 8, 1843, and is a son of Abram and Jane (Hoover) Scott. His father was a native of Ohio, and his mother of Pennsylvania. His parents emigrated to this state from Ohio in 1856, and located in Canton Township, this county where they lived one year, then moved to where Vinton is now located, when there was but two stores in the place. His father entered 220 acres of land, a part of which comprises the present city of Vinton.He lived there two years, then moved to Canton township, remaining there till 1879, when he sold out and removed to Calhoun County, where he bought a farm and there remained until his death which occurred in 1883. The mother had died two years previously.
Josiah was reared as a farmer's boy, and remained at home until eighteen years of age. At that time the great call for volunteers was made, and he with many others immediately sprang to the front in support of the Union. On the 28th day of September, 1861, he enlisted in Co. D., 12th Iowa Vol. Inf., and served until the close of the war. He was in many of the hard- fought battles of those dark days, among which were Ft. Donelson, Shiloh, Vicksburg, Jackson, Tupelo, and Spanish Fort. He, with the whole brigade, was captured at Shiloh by Hardee's Corps, and was taken to Tuscaloosa and put in prison, where they were kept under Capt. Wirtz, the noted prison-keeper. After being imprisoned fifty-two days, they were exchanged and sent to St. Louis. Mr. Scott was mustered out as Corporal, Jan. 26, 1866, and returned to his home in Canton Township, where he remained one year. In 1867, he went to Colorado, and worked one summer in the Black Hawk Mine. He was in several fights with the Indians, losing a team at one time. He again returned home in 1869, and soon afterward purchased an interest in a steam sawmill. About 1870 he purchased forty acres of land, and in 1874, moved to the place where he now lives. He owns eighty-eight acres of land, a part of which lies on section 35.
Mr. Scott was married, Sept. 7, 1871, to Sarah A., daughter of Joseph and Ann (Welty) Garver. They have had five children, three now living — James C., George E. and Josiah A. The deceased were Goldie M. and an infant. Mr. Scott is a member of the Christian Church and the G.A.R.
