SAMUEL BUMGARDNER, a native of Somerset County, Pa. was born on the 12th day of May, 1836, and was a son of Christian and Susan (Zimmerman) Bumgardner, who were residents of Pennsylvania, but moved from that State to Elkhart County, Ind., where Samuel lived until sixteen years old, when he came with his parents to Cedar Rapids, Linn Co., Iowa. At the breaking out of the Rebellion he was eager to enlist under his country's banner, and at the first call he joined Co. D, 12th Iowa Vol. Inf. He participated in the battle of Shiloh and was there taken prisoner, and for ten months he was confined in Rebel prisons, and was then exchanged and returned to his regiment, taking part bravely in all its engagements. He served his three years, and again re-enlisted and remained until the close of the war.Mr. Bumgardner was married in Linn County, Iowa, Jan. 1, 1867, to Miss Elender J. Holland, born in Fayette County, Ill., May 31, 1848, a daughter of Richard S. and Martha A. (Fitzgerrald) Holland. Her grandfather, Davis Fitzgerrald, was in the War of 1812.
In 1866 Mr. Bumgardner came to Vinton and opened a barber-shop, and the following year moved his family here. He followed his trade until his health failed, caused from exposure in Southern prison pens, and he died June 3, 1877, leaving a wife and two children to mourn their loss. He was a true friend in every sense of the word, and one who could be relied upon, and his death was deeply regretted by the community of which he was a member. In his home he was a loving husband and kind father, and was respected by all who knew him.
Mr. and Mrs. Bumgardner were the parents of three children, two of whom are living- Mary Ellen and Charley D. The deceased was named Ester A.
