William Hicks, born Jan. 21, 1830 in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvannia to
Mary and Abraham Hicks,  came to Benton County, Iowa  in 1852.  (Source:

  In 1855, married first wife, Mary Anne Miller, born Feb.2, 1838 in
Illinois to Mary and Humphrey Miller.  (Source: Civil War Pension
Declaration) They had 4 children born to them in Benton County: Miles
Franklin Hicks, born July 9, 1856; Delila Hicks, born Sept 21, 1858;
Lawrence Jefferson Hicks, born July 15, 1861; and Mary Ann Hicks, born
Feb 20, 1864.  (Source: Civil War Pension Declaration and numerous
Federal Censuses)  This first wife dies Mar. 10, 1864 in Benton County,
Benton Township and is buried in McBroom Cemetery .
  William enlists for the Civil War (at Shellsburg) on Aug, 7 1862, was
mustered Sept. 2, 1862, was disability discharged Feb. 14, 1863 at Helena,
Ark. (Source: Benton County Civil War Enrollment list available at most

  William marries second wife, Margaret McBroom, born Nov. 6, 1833 in Rock
Island County, Illinois to Isaac McBroom and first wife Polly Huit

children born to them - 5 in Benton County:  William M. Hicks, born
Nov. 26, 1866; Albert, Bertie, and Jacob Hicks (triplets), born Jan.
24, 1869 (These triplets died within 3 weeks of birth and are buried in
McBroom Cemetery in Benton County); Delia Hicks, born Apr. 21, 1871;
and Eliza Hicks, born May 21, 1874. (Source: Civil War Pension

  William Hicks owned 20 acres of land in Section 24 of Benton Township.

Dunlap, Iowa in 1873 where he remained until his death Oct. 4, 1913.
  Besides William Hicks and his first and second wives being early
residents of Benton County, William's father in law, Isaac McBroom and
his second wife Mary Miller McBroom were also early residents of Benton
County.  Mary Miller McBroom was the mother of William Hicks'first wife.
Both Isaac and Mary McBroom are buried in McBroom Cemetery.
