presumptive finding of death was made in 1944, it is
unknown if his body was recovered. The following telegram was received by Mrs. Verda Ingles of Racine, Wis. on Oct. 30, 1944: "The Secretary of War desires to express his deep regret that your brother, Private First Class Daniel P. Kelly has been reported missing in action since October 2nd in Holland. If any further details or other information is received you will be promptly notified. Signed J.A. Ulio, Adjutant General." Pfc. Daniel P. Kelly is the s/o Mr. and Mrs. John F. theater with the 348th Engineers Battalion; wounded in
July 1944, during the French invasion operations; later
was stationed in Germany & Belgium. He attained the
rank of Sergeant and was discharged November 6, 1945.
Sometime later he removed to California. He died
12/18/1989 in Eureka, Humboldt co., CA (online Calif.
Death Index) -- Private Roland Madorin is now somewhere in England, according to a letter received by his mother, Mrs. Phoebe Madorin, Monday. "Tell the folks I'm going to try and live up to the reputation of my three uncles, Art, Pat & Mel [Brandt], established in the first World War. If I can do that, I'll be contented the rest of my life," he writes. Corporal Arthur F. Brandt made the supreme sacrifice while serving with the famous Rainbow Division in World War I. He was Postville's first volunteer and also the first to give his life on the battlefield. The American Legion Post here bears his name. Pat (William) is a mechanic at the local highway garage, and Mel, the 3rd uncle "Tiny" speaks of is now a resident of Decorah. Fred Mauss arrived Wednesday of last week from the East Coast and is spending a 21 day furlough with his mother, Mrs. Florence Mauss, and brothers, Bernard and 'Connie' and their families after spending 39 months overseas in the European theater of operations. 'Freddie' has been with the Infantry Regiment of the 34th Red Bull Division. He returns as a veteran of the British Isles, African and Italian campaigns. He wears three battle stars on his European theater ribbon, combat infantry badge and the Pre-Pearl Harbor ribbon. He was inducted into the U.S. Army May 5, 1941, and spent one furlough here Oct. 15, 1941 before being sent overseas in January, 1942. Cpl. Mauss is receiving a most cordial welcome home from his numerous New Albin relatives and friends, but "Freddie" is just about the most pleased soldier you can meet to be once more back with home folks, relatives and friends, all of whom have just reason to feel mighty proud of him." and "Redistribution Station, Hot Springs, Ark.: "Cpl. Fred J. Mauss, new Albin, Iowa, recently home on a furlough after serving 39 months overseas in Italy and Africa, has reported in the Army Ground and Services Forces Redistribution State in Hot Springs, Ark.
