Thomas Joseph Murphy and his wife Sarah O'Marra lived in Lansing, IA in 1862. They had a son born in Lansing on October 27, 1862. Shortly after, on December 28, 1862, he enlisted at age 20 into Company M, 2nd Iowa Cavalry Volunteers.

The next year he transferred to join his brother John in the 5th Tennessee Cavalry where he achieved the rank of 2nd Lt serving as Regimental Quartermaster. He was wounded in battle and treated at the Officer's Hospital in Nashville. After the war he studied medicine and became a physician, practicing in David City, Nebraska. He retired in 1902 to California and in 1905 was admitted to a soldiers' home in Sawtelle. He died there June 16,1906 and is buried in the cemetery at the Soldiers Home.
