MEYER’S SAWMILL ADDS TO AREA’S ECONOMY
One of the busiest places in New Albin is Meyer’s Sawmill on the north end of town. The mill, at which a new saw as well as other new equipment was installed only last December, is in its 16th year in New Albin. The owner is Audie Meyer, who has been in the logging business for about 30 years.
About 12 men are employed at the mill. Thousands of railroad ties are cut from timber hauled in from surrounding woodlands. Meyer said that the Milwaukee Road buys approximately 25,000 ties from his company in a typical year.
Up to 11 million board feet of lumber are sawed out yearly at this mill in the Northeast Iowa community. Red and white oak and walnut are among the principal trees cut by Meyer’s crew.
The American Elm, he says, is now about 75% dead from the effects of Dutch Elm Disease.
