-enumerator remarks for Union Prairie township:
"A Scarlet Fever Epidemic prevailed in this and the
adjoining district of Ludlow, originating i the latter in the
month of September 1879 and continuing to prevail with more or
less severity till may of this year when it entirely disappeared.
The cause and propogation of this outbreak was undoubtedly due to
climatic influence; and in the earlier stages of its progress,
its graver features were in many instances, undoubtedly, much
aggravated by improper medical treatment; such at least, is the
opinion of Dr. J.P. Mattoon, one of th emost experienced and
successful physicians in Northern Iowa, and from whom this view
of the subject was obtained. One very marked and peculiar feature
of this Epidemic was; its ravages were almost exclusively
confined to the German and Scandinavian population."
"Not convienent to see Dr. Barnes; Dr. Rowe has left the
country. Report of cases was 4 and 9 confirmed by Dr. Mattoon who
also attended them."
