Margaret (Glander) Diedrich
Margaret Glander Diedrich was born in
March of 1890 to Bertha and Gustav Glander, German
immigrants who came to live in Milwaukee. Margaret's
father was barn boss of the horses for a coal company.
Her mother, busy at home with four children, made sure
the children learned German. After her schooling, Margaret cared for young children before taking a job in a shoe factory. October 5, 1912, she married Albert Diedrich and began a new phase of her life. Margaret remembers her home as being the entertainment center for all the relatives, and she and Albert carried on that tradition of good times. In 1918 they moved to Racine, Wis., where they raised two children, Lois and Ralph, and made their home for the next fifty-six years. Coming to Postville to be closer to her family, Margaet joined us at the Good Samaritan Center in May of this year. Since she is fluent in German, she has been a welcome addition to our German Conversation Group, and is an enthusiastic participant in many activities. ~Postville Herald, Wednesday, July 9, 1980 (column: Resident of the Month, Good Samaritan Center, Postville, Iowa) |
